Introduction to IT Course Overview

The Introduction to IT course will allow you build and develop your IT skills from scratch.  The course is geared in building you confidence in the everyday use of computers.  You will learn how use Windows, create simple documents, save and retrieve your work.  The course is suitable for complete beginners.

 

By the end of the course you will be able to :

  • Effectively use the Microsoft Windows platform to perform common everyday tasks
  • Create and save a Word document
  • Use a mouse and demonstrate keyboard use

General overview of Windows

  • How to start Windows
  • Finding and starting a program
  • Using the start menu, Task pane and short cut icons
  • Moving icons and windows
  • Shutting down windows

Using the mouse

  • Identifying different parts of a window
  • Resizing and arranging windows
  • Control Panel
  • Mouse settings, click, double click

Using the keyboard

  • Keyboard keys:enter, spacebar, shift, caps lock, backspace, delete, home, end, cursor keys
  • Familiarising keys on a keyboard and typing practice

Introduction to Microsoft Word

  • Using menus
  • Creating, printing and saving (save as and save) a document
  • Opening an existing document
  • Fonts and colour
  • Bold, italic and underline
  • Position on page e.g. left, right centre, justified
  • Bullets and number
